Belfast weather alone cannot wash solar panels clean; standard rain is insufficient for removing stubborn grime and traffic film. The efficiency of a solar array decreases linearly with the amount of shading on the cells. This specific commercial installation suffered from several years of neglected maintenance.

This project tackled a complex solar array on a 40,000-square-foot commercial distribution center roof in Belfast. The system consists of over 500 individual solar panels, primarily flat-mounted on specialized non-penetrating ballast racking systems, designed to make optimal use of the roof space. However, being close to industrial zones and major arterial roads meant the panels were constantly exposed to heavy particulate pollution. While the system was initially designed for high output, the years of accumulated contamination—traffic film, industrial dust, pollen, and persistent bird droppings—created a physical barrier, blocking sunlight from reaching the photovoltaic cells and dramatically reducing energy conversion rates.
Northern Ascend’s mission was to implement a comprehensive cleaning plan that was both effective and safe for the sophisticated equipment and the facility personnel. The initial site assessment revealed that performance was down by an estimated 18% compared to original projections. The client was concerned about the long-term impact on the panels’ warranty and the immediate loss of return on investment. Our task was to deploy a highly specialized cleaning crew to restore optimal clarity to the glass surfaces without using abrasive tools or harsh chemicals, ensuring the maximum possible efficiency gain. The project required precise coordination and strict adherence to safety protocols for working at height.
Belfast’s unique environment presented several challenges. The main obstacle was the heavy, stubborn accumulation of atmospheric pollution, primarily composed of a sticky traffic film from nearby roads mixed with persistent industrial dust. This mixture had hardened into a resilient layer over five years, creating widespread shading across individual solar cells. Additionally, localized areas were heavily contaminated with acidic bird droppings, which are not only hard to remove but can permanently damage the panel’s glass coating if left untreated.
The complexity of the ballast racking system created awkward spaces between the panel rows, making manual access and proper cleaning coverage with general equipment very difficult and time-consuming.
Our solution centered on a highly technical approach using advanced equipment. We deployed an IRATA-certified access team, leveraging their rope-access expertise to safely navigate the complex rooftop ballast system and access all panel areas without risk to themselves or the facility. Instead of standard tap water, which can leave mineral deposits and spots, we used a specialized pure-water cleaning system. This purified water, with zero total dissolved solids (TDS), was pumped through the multi-hose system directly to the specialized rotating brush, as seen in the photograph. This gentle but powerful approach, free from harsh chemicals, allowed us to simultaneously scrub and rinse, ensuring every panel was left perfectly clear and residue-free, optimizing its ability to absorb sunlight.
Following the completion of the meticulous pure-water cleaning, the visual transformation of the solar array was immediate and dramatic, removing years of efficiency-blocking grime. The client began to see measurable improvements in energy generation within the very first clear day. Northern Ascend worked with the site managers to review the performance data and provide a documented breakdown of the results.
Directly measurable increase in peak and average daily power generation was recorded.
The chemical-free pure-water method was confirmed to be gentle and safe for the panel coatings.
A regular, periodic maintenance cleaning schedule was established to prevent grime re-accumulation.
All work was completed without incident, fulfilling all commercial and insurance safety requirements.
The project was a clear success, validating the client’s decision to invest in professional solar panel maintenance. The 18% efficiency increase means the investment in the cleaning service will pay for itself multiple times over the course of the next few years. The client was highly satisfied not only with the energy data but also with the professionalism and safety-first approach of the Northern Ascend team, ensuring that their valuable solar investment is now performing at its maximum potential. Northern Ascend now provides ongoing solar care for this and other installations for this commercial client.
