This project involved servicing an extensive commercial solar panel installation set on a weathered corrugated metal roof in Belfast. The array covers a large surface area designed to generate substantial power for local operations. However, due to its elevated location and exposure to coastal weather, industrial fallout, and surrounding road dust, the panels had developed a visible layer of film and debris that severely hindered energy absorption.
Northern Ascend conducted a comprehensive visual assessment before commencing work to determine the safest access methods and optimal cleaning approach. Working on profiled metal roofing requires strict adhere to high-level safety guidelines. Our team deployed specialist pure-water equipment and soft-bristle washing setups tailored specifically for delicate glass coatings, ensuring thorough cleaning without risking surface scratches or mineral staining.
The primary challenge lay in safely accessing and cleaning a high-pitch, profiled metal roof covering a substantial area. Over years of continuous exposure to Belfast’s climate, the array had accumulated a thick, persistent layer of traffic soot, atmospheric pollution, and organic debris that created a dull film over the photovoltaic glass. This heavy contamination acted as a physical barrier, directly shading individual solar cells and noticeably reducing the overall generation efficiency of the entire commercial installation.
Navigating the roof structure itself presented significant operational hazards due to the steep slope and slippery corrugated metal sheets. Working on profiled industrial roofing demands specialized high-access equipment and rigorous safety protocols to prevent accidental falls and protect the structural integrity of the roof sheets. Balancing these strict safety measures with the need for thorough, methodical access across hundreds of individual panels made the cleaning operation a complex task requiring professional rope access expertise.
To overcome these challenges, Northern Ascend deployed an IRATA-trained team equipped with a deionised pure-water cleaning system. The purified water absorbed stubborn grime and lifted stubborn residues without requiring abrasive chemicals or detergent. Using lightweight, extendable water-fed poles fitted with soft-bristled brushes, our technicians safely reached every row of the array, leaving the panels completely clean, streak-free, and spot-free.
Following the complete pure-water service, the solar array showed immediate visual improvement, returning the glass surfaces to pristine condition. The removal of performance-robbing dirt restored optimal sunlight exposure across every individual solar cell.
Peak generation levels were successfully restored following the removal of efficiency-reducing grime layers.
All work was completed strictly according to working-at-height safety protocols on pitched metal roofing.
